Walking Cheshire’s Sandstone Trail

The Best of Cheshire

A hot summer's day on Bickerton Hill

A hot summer’s day on Bickerton Hill

Cheshire’s Sandstone Trail is one of the finest and best loved long distance paths in North West England. It’s a fantastic, easy family walk that’s suitable for everyone, from grandparents to children.

The Trail follows the elevated ridge of sandstone hills — that rise dramatically above the Cheshire Plain — for 55 kilometres/34 miles across this essentially green county from the broad Mersey estuary to rural north Shropshire.

Ever-changing Views

Along the way you’ll experience the very best of Cheshire: ever-changing views and lofty panoramas over Wales and the Pennines; wooded escarpments, sandstone cliffs, viewpoints and caves; undulating, oak-dotted pastures and verdant farmland; vast and ancient, sun-dappled Delamere Forest; prehistoric hillforts, dramatic medieval and Victorian castles; half-timbered black-and-white and sandstone manor houses, farms and historic inns; Roman roads, sunken green lanes, packhorse routes, saltways, and old coach roads; tranquil rivers, streams and rural canals; marl pits, mosses and meres; heathland and heather.

Unspoilt Cheshire

Unspoilt Cheshire is bursting with wild flowers and wildlife, too. Along the Trail can be seen everything from bluebells and bilberries, to buzzards and barn owls, brown hares and butterflies.

Whatever the weather or the season, the Sandstone Trail is a real breath of fresh air.

Unforgettable …
